How Reiki can help support fertility treatments.

Reiki healing is very useful during pregnancy and in treating infertility.

The infertility journey can be emotionally draining and frustrating, you can feel powerless during waiting phases, desperate, depressed and helpless.

By introducing REIKI into fertility treatments, you are able to have a shift in your stress levels, as well as a greater shift towards being hopeful with a more positive outlook.

Reiki means ‘universal life energy’ in Japanese and is a natural Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is based on the principle that negativity is caused by a disruption in the body’s energy field or life force. By channelling energy, it is believed that the body can be filled with positive energy causing the negative energy to release.

Energy fields in the body have different vibratory levels and Reiki Therapists use their hands to affect and rebalance these vibrations in the negatively affected part of the body.

Reiki connects to the spiritual element within us, our life-force energy, and is administered by ‘laying-on of hands’ in different positions on the body. It is a non-invasive treatment.

Reiki is not the removal of symptoms; it is about releasing the cause of breakdown in the body back to a state of alignment and health.

Reiki brings you in touch with your emotions and feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. It treats the whole person, including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being.

Reiki will help you to

  • De-stress about your infertility
  • Change your negative mindset by shifting you into a positive space
  • Relax when it is so difficult to relax
  • Release mental blocks you may have about fertility
  • Remove the imbalance in the pelvic and reproductive area
  • Make healthy lifestyle changes and give you a feeling of encouragement

With the help of Reiki couples with unexplained infertility stand to gain most. In case of women who are unable to conceive due to specific medical reasons which have been identified, Reiki will help you cope with the treatment better and restore your health faster.

Our latest article in NCT Smalltalk

I recently had this article published by the NCT in Medway which I am delighted to share with you, it is my journey with Reiki and how it has helped me as a mum with my gorgeous children.  I hope you enjoy reading it.

‘I discovered Reiki 20 years ago, a work colleague and his partner had been trying unsuccessfully for a baby, she had tried a variety of fertility treatments and had then attended Reiki sessions to ease the grief and overwhelming disappointment of finding she was unable to conceive. They were amazed and surprised to find that she was pregnant and he was sharing with everyone the wonders of this Japanese ‘hands-on’ healing technique.

I was sceptical of this positive healing energy that could boost the immune system, relieve stress and tension as well as bring balance to the body. It sounded just too good to be true yet at that time I was working hard in an extremely demanding job, I was starting to feel the impact of the high expectations, time pressured results and long hours – I was stressed and Reiki sounded like an easy option to try out.

I loved Reiki! From the first session I felt more relaxed, more energised and better within myself. I kept coming back for more and I decided to learn as much as I could about Reiki, I loved that it didn’t matter what my personal beliefs were, that this was simply a flow of energy that seemed to dissolve the stress and calm the mind. I realised that it was time for a career change so I trained in Reiki and counselling too, I found that I started to see the world differently, I began to recognise the judgements and the pressures that I put upon myself to perform and be accepted by others and as I stepped away from them it made my life simpler, easier.

During this time I got married and a few months later fell pregnant.  Throughout my pregnancy I ran workshops and treated clients, I had Reiki treatments and gave Reiki to myself regularly, these helped me to connect and bond with my unborn baby, I could feel the immense love that we shared and the energy helped to release my fears around labour too.

I chose to have my baby at home. I asked my Reiki Therapist and friend to be my birthing partner and she was there with me throughout my son’s birth.  I would love to tell you a story of a calm and wonderful birth but in truth the fear did hit me, I reached a point where I felt scared of the pain, it was too much to continue to bear and I didn’t know what to do with myself, at this point my wonderful friend stepped-in, she brought the Reiki energy into the birthing experience and gently reminded me to breathe and focus on the energy within, as I did this I immediately felt myself calm and focus into the job in hand.  It felt as if the Reiki energy reminded me to trust that my body knew what to do, some few hours later my baby arrived safe and sound at home without any medical intervention or any pain relief, we had done it!

Of course that was only the beginning, those early days and weeks were an emotional rollercoaster and once again I forgot all about Reiki. I felt so utterly disappointed with myself when I failed at breastfeeding, I felt useless as a mother to be unable to feed my baby and I didn’t realise that his constant crying was a reaction to my own inner anxieties, he became colicky, he cried desperately to be fed only to then be sick and then cry with the pain in his tummy, he wouldn’t sleep and I felt shattered, lost and overwhelmed.  I didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t until the day my friend called to ask how I was doing and I sobbed on the phone at how hard it was that she asked me whether I was using the Reiki?

Of course, Reiki! I began giving myself and my precious baby healing, we calmed, he settled, his colic eased and I felt my beautiful boy and I connecting once again, our bond so strong, so clear and so wonderful.

Reiki has become a big part of my life, it supported me with my following pregnancies and childbirth, and it empowers me every day as a Mum to nurture and care for my family.’

A midwifes view of Reiki Babies

I was chatting with a friend recently who is also a midwife. We were talking about Reiki Babies and I was telling her about my vision, how I would love for Reiki to be introduced into the family, for parents to realise what a fantastic tool it is in helping us to balance, to unwind and remain calm in stressful situations. We talked of how Reiki can help pregnant mums who are suffering with the side effects of growing a baby, how it can relieve anxiety around childbirth and especially help mum to balance her hormones and boost her physical recovery once baby has arrived.

My friend talked of how she wished the midwives could do more for new mums and how she felt that any tool, any technique that would help mums to relax and empower themselves to acknowledge they’re doing the best for their baby would be fabulous.  She also said she believed that there would be less cases of postnatal depression as mums really got some positive support that would nurture and validate them at such a vulnerable time.

I remember those early days and weeks, feeling so rough and yet trying so desperately hard to be perfect for my baby, each time I saw the midwife or health visitor I just felt judged and deemed not good enough, I remember going to groups and meeting other new mums who would paint a wonderful picture of a harmonious time with their baby and I would then feel like an utter failure.

Hindsight is a wonderful tool and now as I look back I realise that in truth we were all struggling and perhaps I was just a little more honest about my feelings of failure and how tough it really was. I also realise the midwives and health visitors were trying to share their advice which they didn’t have the time to give gently to me and so in my fragile state I perceived it as criticism.

Reiki Babies is a vision of mums feeling empowered, to have a tool, a technique to use when she feels utterly helpless, when she doesn’t know what to do to settle her baby she calls in the Reiki energy, when she feels drained and exhausted she can connect with the Reiki energy and recharge, for every situation Reiki can be the calm, the relaxation, the breath of fresh air to recognise what’s really important and what really needs attention.

The Reiki Babies groups are about mums supporting mums so that no-one ever feels alone, judged or like a failure as a mum ever again. Groups are small so that there is the personal time, time for you and time for baby, time to rest, energy to recharge and encouragement to empower you to recognise that you are the perfect mum for your baby!

Reiki healing prenatally and postpartum.

I just had to share this article as it explains so well why Reiki is so good for us during pregnancy and postnatally too…

Reiki Healing Prenatally and Postpartum – Monthly Article – quoted from http://healingmidwifery.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/reiki-healing-prenatally-and-postpartum.html

“Reiki? You mean where someone lays their hands on your body and channels energy to make you feel better? Yeah, I’ve heard of it, but have no clue what it is.” Most folks interested in a holistic approach to health have heard of Reiki. Few have actually experienced it and even less can explain how it works.

In a nutshell Reiki is a simple, non-invasive, holistic healing modality where the practitioner channels energy to help heal the body. The channeled energy comes from Universal Energy, that exists around all living beings and objects. What is Universal Energy you ask? It’s similar to holding your palms about a half inch apart from each other and feeling that fuzzy warmth between them – that is Universal Energy. It’s all around us.

Reiki healing takes place on physical, spiritual and energetic levels by balancing the natural energy of the body. Pregnant and postpartum women have found Reiki useful for everything from relieving day to day stresses to turning a baby as delivery nears.

Reiki can be used to achieve whole body relaxation as it removes blockages, allowing energy to flow unhindered and helping pregnant moms cope with their ever-changing bodies. Having opened the energy channels of the body you won’t hold onto things like stress, muscle knots and toxins. Plus, one of the secret added benefits of Reiki is that it leaves mom with more energy than when she arrived – always a nice bonus.

A recent study at The Hartford Hospital in Connecticut showed that Reiki used during pregnancy on a regular basis reduced stress and anxiety by 94%, pain during pregnancy by 78% and nausea and morning sickness by 80% after Reiki sessions. The study also showed that a woman’s quality of sleep was improved by 86% when Reiki sessions were included during pregnancy.

Unlike massage, mothers-to-be don’t have to be cautious when using Reiki while pregnant. The only precaution is that, as the pregnancy goes on, mom may have to sit in a chair or lay on her side rather than on the back. Treatment may also be shorter if mama is uncomfortable laying still for that long.

As we all know, an unborn child shares her emotional state with her mother. There is no better time than during pregnancy to experience the benefits of Reiki, both for you and your baby. The state of overall wellness that is passed from mom to baby helps nurture baby in the womb, during labor and after birth.

After birth, postpartum, Reiki can be used to accelerate the natural healing process as well as provide relief and comfort to physical aches and pains. Baby can still participate in the session, with mom holding her new baby or lying next to her.

Thinking about trying Reiki and wondering what your first appointment will be like? Generally, you can expect the Reiki practitioner to sit down with you to discuss your reasons for being there and ask what your intentions are. He or she will ask you to lay on their massage table, fully clothed with your shoes off. The practitioner may place their hands on your body over your clothes or may hold his or her hands a few inches from your body using gentle hand movements to channel energy. Either way, the vital energy force will be channeled through the practitioner to your energy field.

“Reiki is a wonderful way for women to nurture themselves and their babies during and after pregnancy.  Giving and receiving Reiki is having the experience of loving and being loved unconditionally.  Children thrive on love.  It allows them to experience their full potential.  The same is true for mamas and papas!”  Molly Fitzpatrick, practitioner and teacher of Reiki at  Transformational Medicine, Portland, OR.
